Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult procedures in plastic surgery – millimeters can determine a good result versus a bad one, particularly given your nose is the most prominent facial feature. Dr. Shuaib’s particular interest in rhinoplasty and nasal obstruction are evident in published articles in plastic surgery medical journals.
Everyone is unique – a good surgeon will evaluate the patient’s facial features to customize each procedure to create beautiful results that enhance facial harmony. During the consultation, Dr. Shuaib will take a photograph and transform it to show you what the outcome could look like following surgery. This is a great tool for patients to communicate their desires and concerns and set achievable expectations.
RHINOPLASTY FAQ
- How is Rhinoplasty performed?
Rhinoplasty involves changing the shape of the nose. Grafts are utilized to achieve the desired changes. Grafts help shape the nose and hold it in place to minimize deterioration over time. Grafts are taken from the septum, ear or the temporal region. On occasion, a rib graft is needed for primary rhinoplasty. (A rib graft is taken through a small incision low in the chest overlying the rib cartilage.) For revision rhinoplasty or for significant bridge augmentation, a rib graft is needed.
An allograft (donor rib cartilage that has been processed for surgical use) can also be used. There is no risk of rejection for the allograft, and it alleviates the need to harvest cartilage from a secondary site. Use of an allograft can shorten the duration of the surgery.
Dr Shuaib mainly performs an “open” rhinoplasty. This entails a small three (3) mm incision over the columella. This incision heals extremely well and is almost invisible three (3) to six (6) months following the surgery. If a nostril reduction or “alar base reduction” is planned, there will be additional incisions on the outside of the nostrils. These incisions are hidden in the natural skin fold and heal very well.
During the consultation, Dr Shuaib will review and explain the options in detail.
- Will septal deviations be corrected during my rhinoplasty?
Yes, septal deviations will be corrected during the surgery. Also, the inferior turbinates may be gently moved to create more space for breathing.
- Will there be bruising?
There can rarely be mild bruising which typically resolves after seven (7) to ten (10) days. The bruising can be easily concealed with light makeup.
- Will there be a lot of pain?
Typically, the pain is mild to moderate. A vast majority of patients do not require pain medication beyond two (2) days after the surgery.
The discomfort that patients experience is primarily due to difficulty breathing through the nose. Breathing becomes easier as healing progresses.
- When can I go out in public?
Most patients venture out after cast/splint removal (which occurs one (1) week following surgery). If bruising remains, it can easily be covered with makeup/concealer.
