Cosmetic Mole Removal
Moles or nevi appear as small growths on the skin. From flat brown spots to raised growths, moles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The majority of moles are harmless and do not pose a threat to health. However, these “beauty marks” are not always welcome when they appear on noticeable areas like the face or neck. At Dallas Facial Plastic Surgery Center, we offer cosmetic mole removal at our aesthetic clinic in Irving, TX.
Almost everyone has moles on their body and more can appear as you get older. Moles are more likely to grow on areas of skin that have the most sun exposure, but they can be appear anywhere on the body, even the soles of the feet. While some moles can be cancerous, this is only a tiny percentage. These moles look different than a normal mole – they tend to change in shape, have irregular borders, grow larger in size and have varying colors. Any strange-looking mole should be examined by a doctor.
Most moles can be removed in an outpatient procedure under only local anesthesia. The method of removal depends on the type, size and location of the mole. Once removed, there is always at least a 50% chance that a mole could return, but it may take years to regrow.
Mole Plastic Surgery
Many flat and raised moles can be removed with minimally invasive plastic surgery. The skin growth can be excised with a scalpel or other device once the skin is numbed. Depending on the diameter and depth of the mole, stitches may be required to close the wound. If there is any concern that the mole could be cancerous, the removed tissue may be sent for laboratory testing.
Some cosmetic mole removal procedures can be completed with laser therapy. Laser treatments that target darker pigmented skin cells may be recommended for removing flat, dark moles. This can reduce the chance of a leaving a scar on the skin.
