Atrophic Scar Removal
When a wound to the skin heals without enough collagen produced, it can leave behind an indent in the skin. This is called an atrophic scar, which comes in many varieties. Rolling, ice pick and boxcar scars are all atrophic scars that can impact the texture of the skin. If you have pitted or indented scars, there are treatments to improve the appearance of your skin. Dallas Facial Plastic Surgery Center offers advanced atrophic scar removal treatments at our clinic in Irving, TX.
When there is a cut, burn, infection or other type of wound on the skin, the body is shifted into repair mode. Typically, extra collagen is produced to repair the skin, creating the scar tissue to close the wound. In some cases, not enough collagen is produced, and the wound is repaired but the new tissue is not as thick as the surrounding skin. This causes an indented or atrophic scar that is quite noticeable, especially on the facial skin.
Acne is the most common cause of atrophic scars. The pockmarked skin from severe acne breakouts is very uneven in texture. Other skin infections and lesions can leave behind pitted scars on the skin that are undesirable and unattractive.
Treatment for Indented Scars
Removing the top layer of skin is the most effective option for restoring an even texture to the skin. Resurfacing and stimulating collagen production on the skin are ideal for atrophic scar treatment. Depending on the depth and size of the atrophic scar, different options in skin resurfacing may be recommended. Laser skin resurfacing is a very effective option for smoothing indented scarring – the ablative option removes the surface cells, revealing the new skin underneath while stimulating new collagen production. Other less invasive options may include microneedling, chemical peels and other laser treatments.
